Iceberg Analogy of Culture

Only a small portion of culture is immediately visible. These are things like language, food, or clothing. But beneath the surface is a much larger part: the values, beliefs, assumptions, and unspoken rules that influence how we think and act. Just like with a real iceberg, what’s hidden below the waterline is much bigger than what we can see above.

In this session, we’ll reflect on what parts of our own culture are ‘above the waterline’—the parts others may notice right away—and what remains ‘below the waterline,’ shaping our interactions in ways that may not be obvious. We’ll also consider how these visible and invisible parts of culture play out when we encounter difference and when we seek to build understanding across communities.

By the end of our time together, you’ll have some tools to recognize not just your own iceberg, but also how to approach others with curiosity and openness, knowing there’s always more beneath the surface than meets the eye.
